  • The brutal stalinist Rakosi was head of hungary, his regime was unpopular amongst hungarians
  • Khruschev allowed for the more liberal Imre Nagy to replace him
  • In november 1956, Nagy announced the hungarian withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact

A

-The US had been made to look weak and incompetent, they did not carry through with the Truman Doctrine despite request from hungary.
-khruschev proved not to be a liability
The us called this an example of Soviet Imperialism
-The UN attempted to interceed but nothing came of it
