what was the purpose of the united nations?
a meeting place for countries to come and work out differences to prevent future wars
The Soviet Union set up a Communist government. What does that mean?
the gov. owns and controls everything
How did the Soviet Union (USSR) and the US differ during this time period?
the soviet union was a communist gov. and the US had a democracy (freedom to choose)
Define NATO and describe its purpose.
NATO is an alliance between countries -they will help each other in case of an attack
What was the Berlin Wall? Why was it important.
A wall built by the Soviets to prevent people from escaping to West Germany. the wall was a symbol of communism to control everything.
Describe what a cold war is and how it was fought between the US and Soviet Union.
It is not an actual war. It is a competition between two nations for power

Describe what led to the Korean war and why the US got involved.
America wanted to help stop the spread of communism. The war was because the north wanted to make all of korea communist.
What is stalemate?
no side wins or loses- things stay the same
What was the result of the Korean war?
end in stalemate.
Communism began to spread around the world. Citizens of the US became worried that communists would enter the US. What was the result of this fear?
This was called the Red Scare. Americans feared that red army (soviets) were secretly in America to turn it, communist. Many people lost jobs and arrested for being accused of being communist.
Describe the arms race.
a competition to have more and better weapons. this lead to the hydrogen bomb
Cuban Missile Crisis and how did it almost lead the USSR and the US to nuclear war
soviets were storing missiles in Cuba so their missiles could hit anywhere in the US. the US navy created a blockade around Cuba which created tension but the soviets backed down.
Describe the space race.
a competition in space exploration. soviets were in space first, but America won by putting a man on the moon.
