cognitve approach to treating DEPRESSION Flashcards

1
Q

ao3: better alternatives

A

depression is caused by other factors such as biolgical factors. e.g. genes. Drug therapies have been developed to to treat biological causes. antidepressants may be more effective - SSRis increase serotnin in the synapses to allow post synaptic neuerons to be stimulated and prevent reuptake into presynaptic nueron. This allows for symptoms to decrease/cure. therefore this takes into account other factors casuing depression

Q

research support

A

research compared cbt to antidepressant drugs and a combo of the two in depressed teens. After weeks, they found that 81% of teens improve while on the drugs and cbt on their own and this increased to 86% when both were used. Therefore this sugguests that CBT can be useful on its own/ with other method. Real world value.

Q

high relapse rates

A

benfits of cbt dont last long - studies looked at long term effectiveness. Researchers looked at patients 12 months following cbt - within 6 months 42% relapsed, 12 months 53% relapsed. CBT may be need to be repeated periodically. Perhaps should be used with other treatments.
