What are SNRiS AND WHAT DO THEY DO
antidepressant dru, increases lvl of serotonin in synapse to stimulate post synaptic neuron and prevent reuptake into presynaptic nueorn
example of SNRIs - F… and how is it taken and what can it be combined with; dosage?; how long to impact symptoms
Fluoxetine - capsules, liquid, 20mg;3-4 months to impact symptoms; combine with CBT
alternatives if previous doesnt work
increase dosage to 60mg; tricyclics e.g. clomipramine - severe side effects; SNRIS- incresases serotonin AND noadrenalin
AO3: COST EFFECTIVE AND NON DISRUPTIVE
cheap compared to therapies such as CBT and quicker.
Thousands of tablets can be manufacturered to the same price of one CBT session. Good value.
Take the drugs until symptoms decline whereas you take time to go to CBT. Better for people who are severely demotivate/ have cognitive learning disabilities.
AO3: BETTER ALTERNATIVES
drug therapy assumes that bio factors are the main cause of OCD - SSris.
However relapse rates after taking drugs sugguest there are other factors e.g. cognitive - obsessive thoughts. This means that alternatives such as CBt may be a better treatment for some patients.
ao3: side effects
effective but patients experience indigestion, loss of sex drive. More serious include hallucintaions and incresaed blood pressure. This lead to many people stopping their medication when they see side effects. therefore this diminsihes the effectiveness of them and reduces the patients life quaility
research support
researchers found that compared to to a placebo SSris were more effective at treating sympoms of OCD. This indicates that use of drug therapy e.g. SSRIS is an effective method for reducing symptoms and incresing life quality.
However drugs only treat the syptoms of the disorder not the cause. Therefore they are unlikely to be a long term solutions
