Q

what is the diathesis stress model sugguesting

A

certain genes leave patients more likely to develop the disorder, but not certain.

Environmental stress is neccessary to trigger ocd

Q

what does it mean when ocd is polygenic; which genes could this be

A

combo of genes increase vulenrability of ocd; genes to do with DA and serotonin have been caused to OCD

Q

genetic explainations

ao3: environmental risk factors not only biologcal

A

researchers asked whether pateints experienced traumatic events and over half of them did. This sugguests that even if people have the genses for OCD they may not get the disorder, but if they experience a traumatic event, this may trigger ocd in them. Biological explanations is only a partial explanation

Q

what does neural explanations suggeusts about ocd

Q

nueral explanation

ao3: serotonin-ocd link not unique

A

depression is caused due to low lvls of serotonin. This sugguests ocd has co-morbidity with other mental disorders. tHIS MAKES IT HARD TO MAKE A diagnosis as a patient may have ocd or another mental disorder. this makes it difficult to give them treatment. tHEREFORE its difficult to say whether someone actually has OCD.

Q

real world application

A

increased understanding of serotonin has lead to development of drug therapy. For example ssris allows for increased serotonin in synapase allowing for post synaptic neuerons to be stimulated and prevent reuptake into presynaptic neurons. Leading to normal transmission of serotonin. This allows for more people to function normally and therfore has real wolrd value.

Q

AO3: research is based on correlation not causation

A

research shows that abnormal nueral systems appear in people with oCD. However this is just correlation. oCD may cause abnormal brain functioning in patients or vice versa. Or perhaps abnormal brain functioning and ocd is influenced by another function such as a traumatic event. Therefore bioogical/ explanations are only a partial explanation for OCD
