cognitive revolution Flashcards
what is donder’s decision making task (1868)?
how long it took for individuals to make a decision
paid attention to how long their reaction time was
simple reaction time task - individuals pressed a button when a light was illuminated
choice reaction time task - two lights that would light up -> press a button for the left light and a button for the right light
what were the results of the donder task?
2nd experiment was more difficult = longer reaction time
how can mental responses be measured?
not directly, but inferred from behaviour
what is structuralism?
the structure of conscious experience could be understood by analysing the basic elements of thoughts and sensations
what is behaviourism?
behaviour is observable and measurable
what is introspection?
an examination of one’s own thoughts and feelings
what is the cognitive revolution?
the development of computers and the information-processing approach
what is the lexical decision task?
measures how quickly people classify stimuli as words or nonwords
