Cognitive remediation therapy for learning disorders, Danner et al. (2015) Flashcards
cognitive remediation therapy =
a behavioural-based training intervention that aims to improve cognitive processes to achieve long-term improvement in functional outcomes. CRT for eating disorders combined simple brain exercises with reflection on thinking styles and strategies and translates these processes to everyday life to improve cognitive flexibility.
main features of CRT
- neuroplasticity
- self-efficacy
- motivation
- empathic reflection
neuroplasticity in CRT=
CRT uses neuroplasticity in that it assumes that through repetition of cognitive exercises, changes in underlying neural pathways can occur.
self-efficacy in CRT=
positive reinforcement and support are incorporated to increase self-efficacy because confidence in the capacity to achieve change is believed to be important in generalizing CRT achievements to daily-life functioning.
motivation in CRT
it targets intrinsic motivation by several enhancement techniques (encouraging personal goal setting, Neuropsychology Educational Approach to Cognitive Remediation) because improvement of cognitive impairments alone will not improve functional outcomes.
Intrinsic motivation =
inherent satisfaction derived from behaviors, independent of their xternal consequences (independent of gains/rewards).
empathetic reflection in CRT=
CRT is delivered in an empathic reflective style, focusing on the ease with which tasks are done instead of on achievements. This is aimed at motivating individuals through positive feedback.
neuropsychology educational approach to cognitive remediation (NEAR) =
a specific CRT intervention designed to improve intrinsic motivation. It integrates several concepts that are known to promote learning and task engagement with practice of cognitive skills using brain exercises.
efficacy of CRT
RCTs show the add-on value of CRT (with CBT) for eating disorders: patients reported reduced symptoms and improvements in quality of life and cognitive flexibility. Further, attrition and dropoup rates are low.
