How is informational processing of the brain similar to that of a computer?
1) FINITE CAPACITY for memory storage (very large for humans)
2) COMPUTER HARDWARE= sensory organs, brain, nervous system
3) COMPUTER SOFTWARE= mental processes involving strategies (e.g. Heuristics, classification, assimilation and accommodation)
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?
Therapy that changes a person’s dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors into those that are more helpful.
How does CBT treat mental illness? (7)
1) RECOGNIZES the negative thoughts
2) RECONCEPTUALIZES- use of self-talk to change negative thoughts to productive and positive ones.
3) IDENTIFY negative feelings that lead to negative behaviors
4) RECOGNIZES physiological signs that come with negative thoughts and feelings (e.g. Stomach churning, short of breath, palpitations and increased heart rate)
5) ACQUIRE SKILLS- relaxation techniques, mindful exercises, meditation and structured daily routines
6) APPLY skills in real life situations
7) POST-TREATMENT assessment
What are the comparisons of CBT and Psychodynamic Therapy? (3)
1) DURATION:
• CBT has a well-defined time of therapy
• PD is long term and may last a few years
2) GOAL OF THERAPY
• CBT helps change thought patterns and behavior
• PD gains insight into and understanding thoughts, feelings and behaviors
3) USE OF HOMEWORK
• CBT patient practices new skills/strategies outside therapy sessions
• Recording of thoughts and feelings may be done outside therapy but not essential to success.
