Third stage name and age
Concrete Operational

Fourth stage name and age
Formal Operational
11+
Children learn entirely through the movements they make and the sensations that result.
Sensorimotor
0-2
Once children acquire language, they are able to use symbols to represent objects. Thinking is still very egocentric. They assume everyone else sees things the same viewpoint as they do
Preoperational
Children are able to see things from different points of view and imagine events that occur outside their own lives. Some organized, logical thought processes are now evident.
Concrete Operational
7-11
Around puberty children are able to reason in much more abstract ways. There is a much greater focus on possibilities and ideological issues.
Formal Operational
11+
children learn that they exist separately from the objects and people around them
sensorimotor
Children learn that they can cause things to happen
sensorimotor
Children learn that things continue to exist even when they can’t see them
sensorimotor
Able to understand concepts like counting, classifying, past-present-future
preoperational
Focused primarily on the present and on concrete rather than abstract
preoperational
Able to order objects by size, color, gradient
concrete operational
understand simple math concepts
