cognitive interview Flashcards
fisher and geiselman 1992
- argued =. ewt = improved if police used better techniques when interviewing wtinesses
- such recommendations = based on psychological insight of how memory works
4 techniques
- report everything
- reinstate the context
- reverse the order
- change perspective
first technique
- report everything
- include every detail , even if may seem irrelevant
-little details = may trigger other important memories
second technique
- reinstate the context
- return to og crime scene I. mind , imagine environment
- e.g what they could see , weather etc
- related to context dependant forgetting
third technique
- reverse the order
- recall events in diff order from og
- give example , back to front
- to prevent ppl from reporting their expections of how the event should’ve went rather than reporting actual event
- prevents dishonesty, harder for people to lie if its reversed
fourth technique
- change perspective
- recall form other pols perspectives e.g how it looked from prepretator
- done to stop effect of expectation , and effects on schema on recall
strength , evidence
p- evidence on how effective
e- meta analysis , kohnken et al , data from 55 studies compared ci to standard police interivew
e- ci = 41% increase in accurate info , only 4 studies showed no real diff , rest did
l- ci = effective , helps recall important details
limitation , time
p- dont wanna use , takes more time + training
e- e.g extra time needed to build rapport w witness and make them feel relaxed before questioning
e- ci = special training , police can’t afford
l- ci = not practical for everyday use = better to focus on most useful parts
limitation , effective
p- not all parts equally effective
e- Milne and bull , each of ci tech, got more info than standard police interview, but found combining report everything and reinstate context = best recall , better than other combos
e- backed what police already thought = other parts better than others
l- challenges credibity of ci , better to focus on most effective elements
strength and limitation ,
p- some techniques = more effective
e- police agree= use pick and mix approach , choosing parts they find helpful , but means no standard version of ci , hard to compare results from diff studies
e- but flexibility also strength , ci = collection of techniques = police ca adapt it to fit their needs
l- so seen as positive , method more practical and adaptable
