cognitive distortions Flashcards
what’re cognitive distortions
faulty, biased and irrational ways of thinking that mean we perceive things in a way that doesn’t match reality and is usually negative
what is hostile attribution bias
those who are more likely to be violent are also more likely to misinterpret the actions of others by assuming they are being confrontational when they arent’t, misreading social cues
explain the hostile attribution bias study conducted by Schonenberg & Justye
presented 55 violent offenders with images of emotionally ambiguous facial expressions.
compared with a control group, offenders were significantly more likely to perceive the images as angry and hostile
what is an AO3 support of HA bias
children identified as ‘aggressive’ and ‘rejected’ were more likely to see a videoclip of neutral/ambiguous behaviour as being ‘hostile’ compared to a control group.
suggests the roots of this behaviour lie in childhood
