cognitive development theory Flashcards
what is piagets theory?
cognitive development
what are the stages of cognitive development?
sensorimotor(0-2 yrs)
pre-operational(2-7 yrs)
concrete operational(7-11 yrs)
formal operational(11-18 yrs)
what happens in sensorimotor(0-2 yrs)
-barely any evidence of cognitive processes before 8 months
-no object permanence
what happens in pre-operational(2-7 yrs)
-use words to communicate but dont know what they mean
-can be egocentric(mountain test)
-called sub stage because children realise they have a lot of knowledge but dont know how they gained it
-children unable to do conversation
what happens in concrete operational(7-11 yrs)
-begin to decentre from egocentrism
-begin to have conversations
-pass mountain test
-perform more logical thinking
what happens in concrete operational(11-18 yrs)
-abstract and hypothetical thinking
-better problem solving and imagination
what is the mountain test?
children are asked on how the doll views the mountain model from another perspective
how are schemas worked?
theory explains how individuals use experiences ti view their world around them
-equilibrium - comfortable understanding
-disequilibrium - something new disturbs schema
-assimilation - child begins to create a new understanding
-accommodation - accepts new knowledge
