Cognitive Characteristics of Play Flashcards
Repetitive Play
Young children tend to be OBJECTIVE ORIENTED and usually engage in body play and object play.
Constructive Play
During this phase, children begin to use more advanced planning and problem solving skills, often engaging in TRANSFORMATIONAL play. (trying to create and build things, building blocks, legos)
-often assisted by scaffolding in this stage.
Perspectives on Intelligence
What are traditional models
-Traditional views of intelligence emphasize the ability to succeed academically and focus on abilities such as a memory, reasoning, spatial manipulation (block manipulation), vocabulary, and analytical abilities in order to establish a score.
-Tests such as the “Wechsler” and the “Stanford Binet” measure this type of Intelligence
WISK, SP6 SP7 (you remember these, all about ACADEMIC success)
Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences
he believed in a holistic view of intelligence that encompassed a variety of abilities:
-Linguistic/verbal
-Logical/mathematical
-Spatial
(first three are more traditional intelligence, but the last five are not)
-Body/Kinesthetic intelligence
-Musical intelligence
-Interpersonal intelligence (know others)
-Intrapersonal intelligence (know ourselves)
-Naturalist (how we understand things behave in the natural world)
Robert Strenberg’s Triarchtic Intelligence.
like Gardner, believed in a more holistic view of intelligence, but divided his system into three broad categories.
- Analytical [typically see on inventory]
- Creative [how well can you come up with new ideas?]
- Practical [how practical are you? street smarts? ]
