cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) Flashcards
CBT
5-20 sessions and can be group based or individual to deal with thoughts and behaviour
what CBT does
understand where their faulty cognition comes from
how the therapy works
normalisation - hearing voices is just an extension of ordinary ability to think in words
reality testing - examining the likelihood of the delusion being correct
evidence for effectiveness
-jauhar (2014) meta analysis that CBT had a small effect on positive and negative symptoms
-pontillo (2016) reduction in severity of auditory hallucinations
explain - moderate support for the effectiveness of CBT (better with other therapies)
however - can’t change levels of dopamine
limited treatment
-challenging dysfunctional thoughts may not be enough to change them if the thoughts have a biological basis
-rarely used without drug therapy (not enough on its own)
