Mild cognitive impairment
One SD below normal impairment of age, matched for education
Characteristics of delirium
Abrupt, brief, impaired attention, fluctuating level of consciousness, incoherent/disorganized speech
Mixed dementia
Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia where lacunar infarcts accumulate and reduce cognitive functioning
Lewy body dementia
Parkinsonian-like changes, increased risk for falls, hallucinations
Frontal dementia
Lacunar infarcts in the frontal lobe causing personality changes
When to screen for cognitive impairment
Over 80, post-delirium/depression, post-CVA, changes in cognitions, difficulties driving
Drugs that can lead to cognitive impairment
Anticholinergic, antidepressant, antipsychotics, Benadryl, Gravol, alcohol
Mini Mental State Exam
30-point questionnaire for Alzheimer’s with lower scores indicating its presence
Rowland Universal Dementia Scale
Dementia test designed to minimize the effects of level of education, cultural background, and language on the results
