cognitive approach to treating depression ao1 Flashcards
what is cbt commonly used to treat
depression and a range of mental health problems
what does cbt begin with
an assessment in which the patient and the therapist work together to clarify the patients problems. they then put together a plan to achieve their goals. one of the main tasks is to identify irrational or negative thoughts
define behavioural activation
alongside the purely cognitive aspects of cbt the therapist may also work to encourage a depressed patient to be more active and engage in enjoyable activities.
what does behavioural activation provide
more evidence for the irrational nature of their beliefs
what is the aim of beck’s cognitive therapy
identify the negative triad to challenge these thoughts and help patients test the reality of their negative beliefs
how does ‘patient as scientist’ work with beck’s cognitive therapy
patient is set homework to test the reality of their negative beliefs. in future sessions if they refer to negative thoughts they can produce the evidence to prove their thoughts are incorrect compared to what is happening
who came up with rational emotive behaviour therapy (rebt)
ellis
what does rebt do with the abc model
extend it to an abcde model. d is dispute and the e is effect
what is the central technique of rebt
identifying and challenging irrational thoughts
how does vigorous argument work in rebt (effect)
the intended effect is to change the irrational belief and therefore break the link between negative life events and depression
describe the two methods of disputing and vigorous argument in rebt
empirical argument involves disputing whether there is actual evidence to support the negative belief. logical argument involves disputing whether the negative thought logically follows from facts
list the three ways the nhs treats depression
antidepressants, combination therapy, mental health teams
describe antidepressants as a way the nhs deals with depression
drugs that treat the symptoms of depression. have to be prescribed by a doctor usually for depression that is moderate or severe
describe combination therapy as a way the nhs treats depression
your gp may recommend that you take a course of antidepressants plus talking therapy (particularly if your depression is quite severe). combination usually works better then just having one of these treatments
describe mental health teams as a way the nhs treats depression
for severe depression you may be referred to a mental health team made up of psychologists, psychiatrists, specialist nurses and occupational therapists. often provide intensive specialist talking treatments as well as prescribed medication
