Cognitive approach explaining depression Flashcards
What is the approach based on
How thinking shapes behaviour. Depression is caused by negative and irrational thought processes.
What is Aaron Becks negative triad based on
The idea that depression is holding negative schema about the world, self and future
What happens as a result of Aaron Becks negative triad
It becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy and leads to cognitive biases
What are the cognitive biases
-selective abstraction
-Minimisation
-Personalisation
-Arbitrary inference
-Magnification
-Overgeneralisation
What is selective abstraction
Drawing conclusions on the basis of one of many elements in a situation
What is minimisation
Downplaying the importance of positive experience
What is personalisation
Taking personal responsibility for events out of a persons control
What is arbitrary inference
Drawing conclusions on little to no evidence
What is magnification
Blowing things out of proportion
What is overgeneralisation
Making sweeping conclusions from a single event.
What is Ellis’s ABC model based on
How irrational beliefs are the source of depression, its not what happened but how we deal with it
A- activating event
B- Belief
C- consequence
What is mustabatory thinking
Assumptions must be true in order to be happy
e.g- I must do well or succeed’
Strengths
-Therapeutic application- CBT and REBT
-Causal effect of abnormal thinking has evidence
What evidence supports causal effect of abnormal thinking
Grazoli and Terry- pregnant women with negative thinking patterns before birth were more likely to develop post natal depression
What are the therapeutic applications
Formed the basis for CBT which has been successful- dobson et al found it just as good as drugs for depression (fewer side effects)
