Cognitive approach Flashcards
The role of Schema
Mental frameworks of information that we use to organise past experiences and to interpret and respond to new situations
- schema becomes more developed as we age
The use of theoretical models
Visual representations of internal mental processes that are used to help researchers study complex processes
e.g working memory model
The use of computer models
Explains mental processes
e.g LTM being referred to as the hard disk
-useful in the development of AI
Cognitive neuroscience
The study of the influence of brain structures on mental processes
- uses non invasive techniques such as PET scans to understand activity in the brain
- for example found hippocampus is involved in episodic memory
Strengths
Real life application
- Lead of the development of the cognitive interview
- contribution to society
Recognises the complexity of human behaviour
Scientific methods of investigation
- PET scans are scientific
- increases validity and provides credibility to psychol9gy
Limitations
Does not explain all human behaviour
- ignores the role of emotion and motivation in explaining human behaviour
