Behaviourist Flashcards
Classical condition
Learning through association
Pavlov
- Bell(NS) Dog ( NR)
- Food (UCS) Dog (UCR)
- Food ( US) + Bell (NS) = Dog (UCR)
- Bell (CS) Dog (CR)
Operant conditioning
Type of learning where behaviour is learnt and maintained based on its consequences
Positive reinforcement
When behaviour is followed by a desirable consequence and is more likely to be repeated
Negative reinforcement
When a behaviour is followed by the removal of an adverse consequence and is less likely to be repeated
Punishment
When a behaviour is followed by an unpleasant consequence and is less likely to repeated
Skinner box
- every time the rat pressed the lever food would be given
- the rat would learn through possible reinforcement each time it pressed the lever it would be rewarded with food
Strengths
Scientific method
- Increases the validity of the behaviourist approach
- Helps psychology gain credibility
- more research can be done
Real life application
- has led to the development of treatment t for mental illness e.g. systematic desensitisation for phobias
Limitaions
Ignores alternative levels of explanation including the role of cognition and emotional factors
