Q
evaluate CBT as a treatment for depression
A
- March et al = CBT vs/+ drugs, after 36 weeks both alone were 81% significantly improved and 86% combined - shows both are equally effective but better together
- no side effects = with CBT you don’t get the side effects like you do from drugs which could be difficult for people with depression so therefore CBT may be more appropriate
- time and effort = CBT requires motivation and time commitment to go to multiple sessions and people with depression may lack motivation, therefore making it difficult to attend sessions
- Keller (2000) = 52% effective alone, 85% effective with anti-depressants
- appropriateness = works well for moderate depression but not for severe depression
- non-invasive = only involves talking to a patient and reframing thoughts
