Cognition, Communication and Perceptual Deficits Flashcards
What is included in cognition
awareness
reasoning
judgement
intuition
memory
executive functioning
What are two outcome measures used to screen cognition?
Mini-Mental
MoCA
How might you screen cognition quickly as a PT?
taking hx (is it consistent with chart)
can they follow instructions?
memory (do they remember you or last visit?)
observation (are they aware of you walking in?)
What is aphasia?
pt is unable to create, use, or understand speech due to lesion in dominant hemisphere
What are the types of aphasia?
fluent- Wernicke’s or receptive
non-fluent- Broca’s or expressive
What is verbal apraxia?
difficulty articulating speech with absence of written language deficit
What is dysarthria?
impaired motor speech production–unable to coordinate speech with respiration, articulation and resonance
Perceptual deficits are typically associated with the _______________ hemisphere.
non-dominant
What are restorative strategies?
intensive practice
decrease intensity and frequency of feedback over time
incorporate functional activities to enhance feedback (weightbearing)
variable practice conditions and environment
What are compensatory strategies?
modify the environment
teach pt to scan environment for obstacles
stand on same side as pt when giving instructions
