The aim is to turn irrational thoughts into rational ones and leaves to behavioural changes.

Ellis called his CBT rational emotion behavioural therapy, he extended his ABC to ABCDEF, and he made the participants challenge their negative thoughts.

Logical disruption- Reasons with them
Empirical disrupting- bring in evidence to challange them
Pragmatic disrupting- being realistic.

Complete homework outside of session time to test their belief in real life environments.
Behavioural reaction
As exersise is seen to help reduce levels of Depression lots of therapists recomend going and engage in activities that are more active.
Unconditional positive regard
Clients will often feel worthless and they might not be willing to change, if the therapist treats with them with unconditional positive regard they might be willing to change beliefs.

Ellis- 27 sessions to complete treatment, it had a 90% sucess rate.
(could depend on certain individual factors)

Works less well with people who have high levels of irrational thoughts and beliefs- Elkin
Some people dont want to put the effort that is required- Elllis.

Babyak- 156 depressed people and assigned them into 4 groups and they either did aerobic exersise, drug treatment or both and he found that after 6 months those who did exersies had a lower relapse rate than those who did the drug treatment.
