Q

What are cofactors?

A

Enzymes require an organic ions to function properly. Help stabilise the structure of the enzyme. Or actually take part in reaction at the active site

Q

Examples of cofactors

A

Chloride ions act as a cofactor for amylase. Means that in order for Amylase to be able to digest starch into maltose chloride ions must be present.

Q

Coenzymes

A

Organic non-protein cofactors contribute to enzyme catalyse reactions by accepting or donating hydrogen ions. larger organic factors can be permanently bound enzymes the cyst often in or near active site involved in carrying electrons chemical groups between catalysts

Q

Prosthetic groups

A

Some cofactors are actually a permanent part of the structure of the enzyme the cyst these cofactors are known as prosthetic group. Essential to enzyme function properly as they help to form the final 3-D shape of enzyme forming the active site of an enzyme zinc iron act as a prosthetic group for carbonic anyhydrase
