Coevolution Flashcards
What is co-evolution?
Reciprocal evolution - a change in one species causes a change in another species, and vice versa
What is co-adaptation?
Character influence by evolution of character in a second species
What is tight co-evolution?
Just 2 species involved
What is diffuse co-evolution?
1 species is affected by many
Give an example of co-evolution caused by competition
Character displacement in sticklebacks:
When there are 2 species, they are morphologically different, where there is one species they have an intermediate morphology = niche partitioning
Give an example of co-evolution caused by predation
Shell thickness in molluscs:
Diffuse co-evolutionary arms race with predators - as predators get stronger mouths, the molluscs develop stronger shells
Give an example of co-evolution caused by parasitism
Brood parasitism by cuckoos
Cuckoos mimic the colour and speckling of the host egg and the baby cuckoo is fed after pushing the other eggs out of the nest
Give an example of co-evolution caused by mutualism
Acacia Conigera and the ant - the ant protects the plant and the plant feeds the ant
What is co-speciation
Speciation in one lineage causes speciation in another
