Coevolution Flashcards

1
Q

Q

Give an example of co-evolution caused by competition

A

Character displacement in sticklebacks:
When there are 2 species, they are morphologically different, where there is one species they have an intermediate morphology = niche partitioning

Q

Give an example of co-evolution caused by predation

A

Shell thickness in molluscs:
Diffuse co-evolutionary arms race with predators - as predators get stronger mouths, the molluscs develop stronger shells

Q

Give an example of co-evolution caused by parasitism

A

Brood parasitism by cuckoos
Cuckoos mimic the colour and speckling of the host egg and the baby cuckoo is fed after pushing the other eggs out of the nest

Q

Give an example of co-evolution caused by mutualism

A

Acacia Conigera and the ant - the ant protects the plant and the plant feeds the ant
