what are complications of coeliac disease?
malnutrition
anaemia: vitamin B12, folate, iron deficiency
osteoporosis
hyposplenism
lactose intolerence
enteropathy-associated T cell lymphoma of small intestine
oesophageal, colon cancer
what are histological features of a duodenal biopsy in coeliac disease?
subtotal/partial villous atrophy
crypt hyperplasia
increase intraepithelial lymphocytes
lamina propria infiltration with lymphocytes
what are presenting features of coeliac disease?
usually presents < 3 years but can present later
chronic or intermittent diarrhoea
recurrent abdominal pain, cramping, distention
recurrent GI symptoms including nausea and vomiting
fatigue
failure to thrive
why do patients with coeliac disease receive vaccinations and which ones do they get?
annual influenza and 5 yearly pneumococcal
due to functional hyposplenism
