Coding Qualitative Data Flashcards
1
Q
coding qualitative data has three steps
A
- preparing for thematic coding and then developing open codes asking questions of your data
- developing larger interpretive categories and themes from data
- presenting thematic findings in lists, careers, or typologies
2
Q
Thematic Content Analysis (TCA)
A
- helps qualitative researchers legitimize their findings and respond to critics who claim that qualitative research is often ‘softer’ then quantitative research
3
Q
The ZigZag approach
A
- the zigzag approach is a process of iterative data gathering and analysis
- the process ends when there is a saturation of themes or when no new themes emerge from the data
4
Q
First stage of thematic coding
A
- open coding
5
Q
open codes
A
- are labels for chunks of data that capture something of the literal essence of the data
6
Q
In vivo coding
A
- inductive codes are often thought as in vivo coding
- codes that come from terms taken directly from the data representing living language, slang, and metaphors
7
Q
Second stage of thematic coding
A
- developing categories and themes
8
Q
Themes
A
- once the categories are operationalized you the move into combining categories into themes
9
Q
Presenting your findings
A
- TCA themes are often written up as lists, careers, or typologies
10
Q
careers
A
- trajectories, or sequential explanations of how people progress through social settings or experiences
11
Q
typologies
A
- highlight differences between events, behaviours, or people
