Code of ethics for the physical therapist
- Principle #1: Physical therapists shall respect the inherent dignity and rights of all individuals
- Principle #2: Physical therapists shall be trustworthy and compassionate in addressing the rights and needs of patients/clients.
- Principle #3: Physical therapists shall be accountable for making sound professional judgments.
- Principle #4: Physical therapists shall demonstrate integrity in their relationships with patients/clients, families, colleagues, students, research participants, other health care providers, employers, payers, and the public.
- Principle #5: Physical therapists shall fulfill their legal and professional obligations.
- Principle #6: Physical therapists shall enhance their expertise through the lifelong acquisition and refinement of knowledge, skills, abilities, and professional behaviors.

What is RIPS
- Realm: individual; organization/institutional societal
- Individual Process: moral sensitivity, moral judgment, moral motivation, moral courage
- Situation: issues or problem, dilemma, distress, temptation, silence
Describe the RIPS model
- Recognize and define the ethical issue(s)
- Reflect
- Decide on a course of action
- Implement, evaluate, and re-assess
What does the ethical situation require of me (ethical judgement)
- Moral sensitivity: simply to recognize the ethical question
- Moral judgement: make a decision about the ethical situation
- Moral motivation: example placing professionalism over other values including self-interest, status, or financial gain
- Moral courage: implementation of the chosen ethical action including deciding ahead of time what to do when barriers become apparent
Describe the Situation
- Issue or problem: important values are present or may be challenged
- Dilemma: two alternative courses of action may be taken, both of which fulfill an important duty, and not possible to fulfill both obligations (Right vs Right)
- Distress: you know the right course of action but are not authorized to take it
- Temptation: involves the choice between a right and a wrong
- Silence: ethical values are challenged but no one is currently speaking out about the values. Possible course of action from someone in moral distress
Tests of right vs wrong positive
- Legal test: know your practice act and state regulations
- Stench test: does it feel wrong as a gut reaction
- Front Page test: how would you like this to be on newspaper
- Mom test: if I were your mother would I do this
