Coat Flashcards
Skin: Tight on all parts of the body; rather thick. Black pigmentation of the mucous membranes, eyelids and the central and toe pads.
Nature of Coat: Very well furnished. Hair long, rather harsh to the touch, closer to straight horse hair; flat to the body; slight wave is tolerated. The coat forms a rich collar around the neck and feathering of limited length on the edge of the hindquarters. It is short on the muzzle, skull, ears and front edge of the limbs. On the body it reaches 8 cm (3 ins). The undercoat is only abundant in winter.
Maremma Sheepdog
Outer coat close, harsh, but smooth; undercoat soft and woolly. On head and front legs - short, close and smooth; longer on chest, neck and shoulders, back of legs and underside of tail.
Norwegian Buhund
Profuse and of good hard texture; not straight, but shaggy and free from curl. The undercoat should be a waterproof pile when not removed by grooming.
Old English Sheepdog
Correct proportion of top and undercoat creates, naturally, the desired cords. Matting and felting to be avoided, and combed coat is as undesirable as a neglected one. Coat generally longest on hindquarters, shortest on head and feet. Some dogs will grow a floor-length coat.
Puli
Double; outer coat of long hair, harsh textured and straight. Undercoat soft, short and close. Mane and frill very abundant, forelegs well feathered. Hindlegs above hocks profusely covered with hair, below hocks fairly smooth. Face smooth. The coat should fit the body and not dominate or detract from the outline of the dog. Smooth coated specimens highly undesirable.
Shetland Sheepdog
Medium length, harsh, close and tight topcoat, undercoat abundant, soft, woolly.
Swedish Vallhund
Short or medium of hard texture. Weatherproof, with good undercoat. Preferably straight.
Welsh Corgi Cardigan
Medium length, straight with dense undercoat, never soft, wavy or wiry.
Welsh Corgi Pembroke

Medium length coat: Dense, close-lying double coat; abundant undercoat covered with hard, straight protection hair; face, ears and front of legs are covered with shorter hair; at the neck and the back of the legs the coat is slightly longer. Slightly wavy, hard hair is permitted.
Long coat: Dense, close-lying double coat; abundant undercoat covered with hard, straight protection hair; face, ears and front of legs are covered with shorter hair; at the neck the long coat forms a distinct mane and at the back of the legs it forms trousers and the hair on the tail is bushy.
