Coasts: Key Words Flashcards
Marine Transportation
Movement of rocks and other sediment by the sea
Marine deposition
Laying down of rocks and other sediment by the sea
Solution
Salts dissolved from the rocks by the seawater are carried in solution
Suspension
Small particles can be carried in suspension by the waves
Saltation
Pebbles will be bounced along the seafloor
Traction
Large rocks will be rolled along the seafloor
Marine erosion
The wearing away of land surfaces and removal of materials by river and sea water, ice and wind
Constructive waves
They are created in calm weather, are not very powerful, break on the shore and deposit material building up on beaches. Their swash is stronger than backwash
Destructive waves
They are created in storm conditions, when wind is powerful and has been blowing for a while. They have high wave energy, are very strong and the waves have travelled over a long fetch, eroding coasts. Their backwash is stronger than swash
Abrasion
Bits of rock and sand in waves grind down cliff surfaces like sandpaper
Attrition
Waves smash small rocks and pebbles on the shore into each other, and they break and become smoother
Hydraulic action
Air may become trapped in joints and crack on a cliff face. When a wave breaks, the trapped air is compressed which weakens the cliff and causes erosion
Solution
Acids contained in sea water will dissolve some types of rock such as half or limestone
