Coasts Flashcards
Name the 4 types of coastal erosion
Hydraulic action, attrition, solution and abrasion
Name the 3 types weathering
Chemical, biological, physical
What is the fetch of a wave?
The area in which ocean waves are formed by wind. Meaning the further the wave travelles the stronger its impact is
What is coastal slumping
the downward movement of a block of material along some curved surface.
What is mass movement?
Large amounts of rock shifting under the influence of gravity
What is the distance between the crest of two waves called
Frequency
What type of mass movement happens to hard rocks
Rock fall
What is happening to the amount of people who live in coastal areas
It is increasing
What is the problem with people living by the coasts
Houses are being destroyed as the coast that they are on is being destroyed
What is the difference between weathering and erosion
When a rock is eroded, is is removed by water, wind or ice, but weathering is the disintegration of rocks in situ
Explain how headlands and bays are formed
On a discordant coastline, ie a coast with rows of hard and soft rock perpendicular to the sea, the soft rock is eroded faster than the hard rock, creating a bay of soft rock and a headland extending out
Explain how a stump is formed
On a headland, cracks open up in the land due to hydraulic action. Over time, the cracks widen, creating a cave and eventually an arch. The top of the arch then collapses due to weathering, leaving a stack in the sea which then falls down, leaving a stump
Why are some waves larger than others
Wind speed, wind duration, fetch
