COASTLINES Flashcards
2 popular coastal human habitats
Barrier islands
River deltas
what’s a barrier island
long narrow sandy islands separated from the mainland by a narrow lagoon
3 kinds of continental margins due to continental movement
- Trailing edge, Passive, Atlantic Type
- Leading edge, Active, Pacific Type
- Transform margins
2 types of coasts
- Primary– formed by land forces e.g. estuaries, Tectonic uplift coast, glacial, delta, lava coast
- Secondary - shaped by sea forces e.g. Sandy barrier islands, Coral reef coasts, Swamp coasts (mangroves + salt marsh)
what happened during still stands between the glacial to interglacial periods
sea level remained relatively stable
- how our modern barrier islands formed
- Beach ridges formed, and then flooded
behind them
3 cause of sea level change
- Ice (Glaciers on land) melting and running into the sea.
- Water temperature rise - thermal expansion of sea water
- subsidence or elevation of the land
whats the main problem for Florida & the Gulf Coast
sea level rise - we have a flat coastline
main ways Florida beaches are maintained due to them being critically eroded
re nourished by pumping offshore sand upon them + armoring
