Coastline Flashcards
Spit formation?
A spit is an extended stretch of beach material that projects out to sea and is joined to the mainland at one end. Spits are formed where the prevailing wind blows at an angle to the coastline, resulting in longshore drift. Larger rocks are often deposited first to allow the sand to gather.
Characteristics of a spit
Long, thin made of sand, rock grass and other natural materials which have been deposited there. There are often salt marshes
How do beaches form?
A beach forms when waves deposit sand and gravel along the shoreline. Some beaches are made of rocks and pebbles. Over time they are worn smooth from being rolled around by waves. The rocks usually reflect the local geology. Headlands could have been eroded building up sediment.
Characteristics of a bar?
Connected to 2 headlands
