Complete control over everything given to monarchs.

The belief that someone’s will to rule came straight from god.
The Protestant Reformation (The Big Split)
Split of the church into Eastern Orthodox and Catholic. Led by Martin Luther (not the same as Martin Luther King Jr. they are different people). Peeps questioned the stability of the church.
King Louie XIV (14th)
Also called ‘The Sun King’ built the Palace of Versailles.
Age of Enlightenment (1650s-1700s)
Thinkers believed that logic was a better guide than religion, faith, tradition, or superstition. (Head Is Greater Than Heart).
Natural Law
thought to be applied to everyone and understood by reason. (How a reasonable, intelligent person would act).
John Locke Says:
The purpose of the government is to serve the people. (Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness).
English Civil War
Power struggle between Parliament and The Monarchy.
Magna Carta
Signed in 1215 to limit power of monarchs, 400 years later, Parliament changed the Divine Right rule.
The Eleven Years Tyranny
King Charles 1 kept Parliament closed for eleven years. (Charles arrested 5 members of Parliament which made a war break out).
Who was the “Lord Protector”??
Oliver Cromwell
The Restoration
Life was harsh under Cromwell, because he was VERY strict about religion. After Cromwell died, Charles ll came back to the throne in 1660.
What did King Charles ll do to Oliver Cromwell??
Cromwell was already dead, but Charles ll made his servants dig him back up, put him on trial, found him guilty, and executed Cromwell twice.
