Co-ordination & response in Humans Flashcards
Sensitivity
The ability to recognise and respond to changes in the environment
Stimulus
A change in conditions
receptor
recognises the stimulus
effector
carries out the response
eg muscle or gland
Homeostasis
the maintenance of a constant environment
neurones
nerves made up of specialised cells
sensory neurons
Neurones that link sense organs to the central nervous system
relay neurons
Neurones within the central nervous system which may be very short
motor neurones
neurones that connect the central nervous system to an effector
Synapse
a very small gap between the ends of two neurones
reflexes
Rapid, automatic responses to specific stimulus that protect you in some way
eg- blinking if you get something in your eye
- sneezing if you breathe in dust
Temperature of the human body
37 degrees
If core temperatures rise to far…
- sweat is released from sweat glands and evaporates
- blood vessels carrying blood near the surface of the skin dilate (get wider) so more blood flow through them = VASODILATION
If core temperatures fall too far…
- no sweat released
- blood vessels carrying blood near the surface of skin constrict ( get narrower) reducing amount of blood flowing through them = VASOCONSTRICTION
Adrenaline
prepares body for fight or flight
