how do amphetamines work
promote the release of dopamine and norepinephrine from the neuron
what is norepinephrine responsible for
fight or flight (tachy, elevated BP, hyper-vigilance, appetite suppressant, urinary retention, super alert)
when thinking of dopamine what do we think of
chocolate - pleasure, feel good, reward center
s/e of amphetamines
HTN, tachycardia, addiction potential, insomnia, weight loss, increased tolerance (dosage problems)
drugs that treat ADHD (Ritalin) allow pt to be
alert and focused
allows positive behaviors to be learned
Ritalin is usually not prescribed for children under
age 5 or 6
how is Ritalin taken
