CNS-Alcohol Flashcards

1
Q

what are the acute effects of ethanol on the CNS system?

A

dose-dependent CNS depression (ˇ membrane excitability + ^GABAa & ˇ NMDA acivation)
diuresis
ˇ myocardial contractility
ˇ anxiety, slurred speech, impaired judgement

Q

how do you treat methanol consumption?

A

ethanol. it has a higher affinity for alcohol dehydrogenase therefore it slows methanol metabolism to formic acid
