CNS-Alcohol Flashcards
what are the acute effects of ethanol on the CNS system?
dose-dependent CNS depression (ˇ membrane excitability + ^GABAa & ˇ NMDA acivation)
diuresis
ˇ myocardial contractility
ˇ anxiety, slurred speech, impaired judgement
toxic doses: CNS and respiratory depression.
what are the chronic effects of ethanol on the CNS system?
fatty liver->hepatitis-> cirrhosis ->liver failure
pancreatits & gastritis
malnutrition
how is ethanol eliminated from the human body?
> 90% is metabolized by the liver (oxidation)
what is methanol, and how is it metabolized?
wood alchohol
methanol metabolism -> formic acid -> blindness
how do you treat methanol consumption?
ethanol. it has a higher affinity for alcohol dehydrogenase therefore it slows methanol metabolism to formic acid
