CNS Flashcards
What are the 3 layers of the meninges?
- Meninges: Connective tissue covering that protects the spinal cord and brain dura mater. Outer layer
- Arachnoid mater: Middle layer
- Pia mater: Inner layer
Spaces within the meninges
-Epidural space: Space between the dura mater and the wall of vertebral anal subdural space. Space between dura mater and arachnoid space.
-Subarachnoid space: space between arachnoid and pia mater
Define meningitis
-Inflammation of the meninges caused by bacteria and viruses
Describe the appearance of the spinal cord
-Cylindrical mass of nervous tissue extending from the medulla of the brain to the first lumbar vertebrae.
-Length: Roughly 45 cm
-Width: 2cm at the widest
Describe the cervical and lumbar enlargements
-Cervical: Roughly C4-T1
-Where nerves to the upper extremities arise
-Lumbar: Roughly T9-T12
-Where nerves to the lower extremities arise
What is the conus medullaris?
-End of the spinal cord (Spinal cord taper into a cone shape)
- Inferior to lumbar enlargement
What is the cauda equina?
-Collection of roots of the spinal cord that do not leave the vertebral column at the same level that they came in at. They exit further down the spine.
-“Horse’s tail”
What is the filum terminale?
