CMDB Flashcards
Which application provides core functionalities for the CMDB?
Configuration application
What is the purpose of the CMDB?
Provide a logical model of the company infrastructure by identifying, controlling, maintaining, and verifying the CIs that exist
What is a CI?
Any component that needs to be managed in order to deliver services (like business applications and hardware to run them).
Can be any tangible or intangible device or application in the CMDB (firewall, computer, email service, service, …)
What are the key CMDB tables?
- Base Configuration Item [cmdb]
= base CMDB table for non IT CIs - Configuration Item [cmdb_ci]
stores the basic attributes of all the CIs - CI Relationship [cmdb_rel_ci]
contains CI relationship data
What does the SN CMDB mainly track?
- CIs within the platform
- Relationships between those CIs
Which tool to use in order to maintain the CMDB efficiency and operational state over time?
CMDB Data Manager
(to create, publish and manage CI policies)
What is the CMDB?
A series of tables and fields that contain all the CIs controlled by the company.
That includes their attributes and relationships
Which roles are required to access the CMDB tables and data?
- asset
- itil
- itil_admin
- cmdb_read
What does a CI form contain?
- All relevant attribute data about an item (name, ownership, version, description, …)
- Info on relationships between items (search for CIs, add new relationship, view CI map, adjust relationship view)
=> use the Related Items toolbar
ServiceNow relationship rules use separate tables to…
define the relationships between specific CI base classes and dependent classes
Which menu application lets us create a new relationship rule?
All > Configuration > Relationships > Suggested Relationships
What does Discovery do?
- Finds devices and applications on the network and updates the CMDB with that info
- Separate subscription besides the Now Platform
What does Service Mapping do?
- Discovers and models the relationships and dependencies between discovered CIs
- Automatically populates the info into the CMDB
Which tool to use to create CI relationships?
CI Relationship editor
(accessed from the Related Items toolbar on the CI form)
What is the purpose of Dependency Views?
- Provide an interactive graphical interface to visualize relationships between CIs
- Indicate the status of CIs
- Allow access to CIs related alerts, incidents, problems, changes, and services
What is the main role of the CMDB in ESM?
Monitor and Discover what system components are needed for effective and efficient business process and ITSM
What are examples of child tables of the core Configuration Item [cmdb_ci] table?
- Database [cmdb_ci_database]
- Hardware [cmdb_ci_harware]
- Software [cmdb_ci_spkg]
- Application [cmdb_ci_appl]
- Server [cmdb_ci_server] (great grandchild)
- Router [cmdb_ci_ip_router] (grandchild)
What is a root CI?
Starting point in a Dependency View
How many domains does the CSDM conceptual model include?
5 domains:
- Foundation
- Design
- Build
- Manage technical Services
- Sell / Consume
What is the CSDM?
Shared set of service-related definitions across SN products and Now Platform
What is the CSDM purpose?
- Enable service level reporting
- Provide guidance on service modeling within the CMDB
- Provide best practices on proper modeling of data using OOB tables and relationships
What is the Common Service?
Standard and shared set of service-related definitions across SN products & platform that will enable and support true service level reporting
What is the Data Model?
CMDB Framework across ServiceNow products & platform that will enable and support multiple configuration strategies
Summarize what the CSDM is.
- Standard terms and definitions
- Best Practice for CMDB Data Modeling and Data Management
- Out of the box CMDB core tables
- Guidance on service modeling
- Recommended mappings
Which tool displays the entire CI class hierarchy in a tree-view format?
CI Class Manager
What is a CI Class?
A table that collects a specific type of data (computers, servers, applications, …)
A CI class represents a type of CIs
Where to find the CI Class Manager?
All > Configuration > CI Class Manager
