Clutches And Brakes Flashcards
What is the purpose of a clutch in power transmition systems?
To engage or disengage a driven machine, without starting and stopping the prime mover.
What do Positive Contact Clutches not allow?
Slippage
What are three types of Positive Contact Clutches?
- Square Jaw
- Spiral Jaw
- Multiple-tooth design
Do Positive Contact Clutches have overload protection?
No, there is no slip allowed.
Can Positive Contact Clutches engage at high speeds?
No, because would cause massive shock and possibly break parts.
What is this?
Square Jaw Clutch
What is this?
Spial Jaw Clutch
Which can be engaged bidirectionally, Spiral Jaws or Square Jaws?
Square Jaw
What does Spline mean for Clutches?
It is a shaft in which grooves have been cut to allow a clutch gear or jaw slide back and forth to engage axially while supporting for torque.
What is this?
Multiple-Tooth Clutch
Name from slowest to fastest engagement the Positive Contact Clutches.
- Sqaure Jaw, Spiral, Mutiple-Tooth
Are Friction Clutches smooth in engagement?
What speeds can they connect and disconnect?
- Yes
- Any
Do Friction type clutches slip?
Yes
What dampens torsional vibrations and shock in friction clutches?
Springs in the friction plate.
What is considered to be wet run friction plates?
Friction plates flooded with oil.
What danagerous material might be in friction wear plates?
Asbestos
- Are there such things as Radial Clutches?
- What are they?
- Yes
- Expanding Shoe, Contracting Shoe
- How do Radial Clutches work in principal?
How do Axial Clutches work in principal.
- Contact pressure is applied against a rim or drum.
- Contact pressure applied to the face using a friction disc and pressure plate.
What is this?
Label it.
An Expanding Shoe Radial Clutch
Explain how an Expanding Shoe Clutch works.
A lever is attached to a sliding engagment bearing. When slid forward the shoes expand outward until they grip the drum and rotate it. The shoes are keyed to the shaft through a serise of links.
How do Contracting Shoe Clutches work?
There is a drum on one shaft and a rim on the other. The rim with the bladder has shoes attached, which forces the shoes outward when the blade inflates. The shoes engage the outside of the drum.
What is this?
Label it.
Contracting Shoe Clutch
What helps remove air/hydraulic fluid from a Contracting Shoe Clutch?
Centrifugal Force
What is the difference between a Clutch plate and a pressure plate in friction clutches?
Pressure plates sandwich a Clutch Plate and are not the wear parts. Clutch Plates are soft and must be replaced when worn down.
