Gas Turbines Flashcards
What type of engine is a Gas Turbine?
Internal Combustion, Constant flow
How does a Gas Turbine work?
The gas turbine operates by drawing air into a compressor, compressing it and discharging the air into a combustion chamber. In the combustion chamber, fuel is added and ignited, which heats and expands the air due to the combustion of the fuel. The hot gases are then directed through the turbine blades. The blades attached to a wheel turn a shaft harnessing energy.
What is the “Power Rating” of a turbine?
The output power of the machine.
Do gas turbines work better when at high temps or low temps internally?
Highest temp possible without harming it.
What does cold dense air do to turnbines?
Increases output and efficiency
Where do you find gas turbines?
Airplanes
Name each part
What is “Regeneration”
When some of the exhaust is used to heat the air of combustion
What is “Cogeneration”
Is when exhaust heat is used to generate steam for power generation of other plant pocesses
Names 3 types of shafts for Gas Turbines
Single Shaft
Split Shaft
Twin Spool Shaft
What is the Gas Generation section?
What parts are in it?
- Where air is brought in from the compressor to mix with fuel in the combustion chamber to create hot expanding gases
- Compressors and combustion chambers
What is in the Power Section of a Gas Turbine?
The Turbine
