Clutch Flashcards
What is a clutch?
A mechanism to disconnect the flow of power from the engine to the transmission - without switching the engine off.
Clutch disc function?
Transmit power from the engine fly wheel to the transmission shaft.
Does so using a pressure plate with high friction material that is compressed against the flywheel under normal operation.
Pressure plate function?
Apply a force to the clutch disc and push it into the flywheel
How is the power transmission disengaged?
The clutch pedal uses a hydraulic powered mechanism to push on the central diaphragm spring of the pressure plate. This moves the edge of the diaphragm spring outwards and disengage the friction plate/clutch disc.
