Cloud Computing Flashcards
What is NIST definition of cloud computing
A model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources
In simple terms what is cloud computing
Where software applications, data storage and processing power and accessed over the internet
What do IDC and Gardner state about cloud computing?
Spending will exceed 500 billion
Effect 1 trillion in IT spending
How much is on the cloud
Somewhere between 20-25 percent
What are the 3 platforms of computing (IDC)
Mainframes and dumb terminals
Pcs and network
Cloud computing
What are the benefits and characteristics of cloud computing?
Dramatically scale able No fixed cost Collaborative Device independent Task centric- focus on what people want
What is SaaS?
Software as a service- take it or leave it form of cloud computing as users run what cloud supplier has to offer. Google docs, Microsoft office online zoho and sales force
What are the benefits and drawbacks of SaaS?
Accessible from any device Collaborative No fc Continually updated Less sophisticated Dependant on the internet Not what people are used to Applications run in the cloud Limited to vendor applications
Pass and iaas both offer platform and infrastructure what are these?
Platform- software environments used to create, run and deploy end user applications
Infrastructure- the physical hardware on which applications and platforms operate
What is PaaS?
Platform as a service
Users create and run saas applications using the tools and languages of the provider
Can rapidly bring cheap SaaS applications to market
Provided online with infrastructure and platform
What are the benefits of PaaS?
Very fast
Build things on the same technology that deploys them
Rapid development
Debugging and implementation are far easier
What are the drawbacks of PaaS?
Flexibility power trade off- build applications but only in the way the vendor allows you to do so
Limited to what you can achieve
Things will work but perhaps not as expected
Vendor lock in
Very large sunk cost
What is infrastructure as a service?
Vendor offers computer hardware in the cloud on which their customers can store data and develop and run whatever applications they please
Allows companies to move existing programmes online and remove data centre
What is virtualisation
After the internet itself virtualisation is the most fundamental technology that allows cloud computing to occur
It allows physical servers to be split into virtual servers and each can be used by an independent user
What is private cloud
Rent part of a data centre
Most risk adverse
Costly
Secure
What Is dedicated hosting
Rent servers on demand Lose some level of exclusivity Others may take control now and then Dynamic scalability Costs significantly less
What is hybrid hosting
Mix of virtual and real servers
Gives flexibility
Application may be on physical but data on virtual
May use for peaks of demand
What is cloud hosting
Sell only virtual servers Gives maximum cloud benefit May be seen as too risky Most technologically advanced AWS dominates service
What are ec2 advantages
Elastic
Reliable
Flexible
Inexpensive
What do garner and IDC argue
Cloud computing is inevitable because
It’s becoming essential to remain competitive
Becoming essential to be green
Becoming essential for next gen applications
IDC (2015)
72% of organisations have at least one application in the cloud
67% of organisations have security concerns
How much is the SaaS market meant to be worth today
47 billion
Occado use g suite
Helps with employee collaboration everywhere
Used app engine to build a where’s my order app
What percentage of internet users live in the top 20 countries
75%
How did easyJet use azure
Built a new seat booking system to
How are airbnb using cloud computing
Uses 200 amazon elastic comput cloud instances
Flexibility and responsiveness is helping them to achieve more growth
How did Lamborghini use aws
Updated from their old infrastructure and found it caused a 250% boost in visitors
Reduced to cost of their marketing infrastructure by 50% while achieving better performance and scalability
