Clotting Disorders Flashcards
What does warfarin do?
Reduces the vitamin K dependent factors of coagulation cascade fibrin clot forming, making it harder to produce a clot.
What does heparin do?
Works on ATIII by increasing its effect up to 2000x fold, inhibit production of clots by coagulation cascade.
What dissolves clots?
Plasminogen/Plasmin system
Levels of what in the blood do you need to know for coagulation disorders?
FBC w/ platelet count
Prothrombin Time
Activated partial thromboplastin time
Fibrinogen level
What is the 50/50 test for non coagulating blood?
Mix 50/50 patient’s blood with normal plasma. If this mixture corrects the lack of coagulation then there is a deficiency in the patient’s blood. If the mixture does not correct the lack of coag then the blood has an inhibitor in.
What is lignocaine?
Lidocaine! Sodium channel blocker acting as an anaesthetic, or slowing down the heart
What is the ‘safety first’ policy in social care?
The policy that any bruising or bleeding in a non-ambulant child must be considered to be non-accidental until proven otherwise.
Which clotting factors affect the APTT?
7, 8, 11, 12 and von Willebrand factor
What is Haemophilia A/B?
A - Factor VIII deficiency
B - Factor IX deficiency
How is haemophilia passed on?
X linked chromosome so mother passes it on to affected sons and as a carrier to daughters if the father is unaffected.
