Clostridium, B cereus, staph Flashcards
Cause of psuedomembranous colitis
C dif from over use of Abx
opportunist
(especially clindamycin)
Gram (+) spore former
C dif
C dif toxins
toxin A: enterotoxin, fluid secretion, inflammation
toxin b: cytotoxin
EIA diagnoses
Detects C dif toxin
What happens after 72hrs in hospital?
normal flora replaced by more virulent bacteria
(like C dif)
Disease with common relapse, requires long term Abx
C dif
fecal transplants
C dif
C pergringens
1 million cases of food poisoning each year
no fever, no vomiting, recovery in a day
Clostridium virulence
enterotoxin
synthed during sporulation
mucosa of ilium, inhibits glucose uptake causes electrolyte/water secretion
Clostridium reservoir and transmission
Meat, poultry, not cooked properly
high dose required
Gram (+) spore former
RICE
B Cereus
What causes the two disease states in B cereus
- vomiting: if spores already formed
2. diarrheal form: if spores form once consumed
Cause of rapid onset of disease with B cereus
Heat stabile enterotoxin
(step 1, vomiting)
Second most common cause of foodborne illnes
Staph aureus
Signs of Gi staph infection
hyper salivation to prepare for vomiting
Why can’t staph be cultured from feces?
terminated in stomach
Disease w/out colonization
staph, check food handlers
microwave will kill staph but not toxin
Staph prevention?
Eat fast before it can grow
