O-1 and O-139
Cholera toxin
ctx A-B
Perturbs adenylate cyclase
electrolyte imbalance
result of double lysogeny
Cholera double lysogeny
Only strains with tcp (receptor) and ctx (toxin) genes produce cholera disease.
Both genes are added by phages and the receptor gene is needed for the CTX virus to get in to add the toxin DNA
Vibrio ID
TCBS
needs basic, salty environment
oxidase (+)
distinguishes from E.coli
Rapid test for cholera
andtibodies for O-1 and O-139
NOT ALL CHOLERA species CONTAIN TOXIN GENE
Cholera Treatment
exotic foods, don’t take antacids
vaccines:
- dukoral (toxoid)
(also helps with travelers diarhhea)
- shachol (killed whole cells)
