Clostridium Flashcards
Clostridium characteristics
Anaerobic
Gram + rods
Produces ENDOSPORES
Produces proteinaceous toxins
Clostridium species (4)
C. difficile
C. perfringens
C. botulinum
C. tetani
What is the leading cause of Nosocomial Diarrhea
C. difficile
What is very difficult to culture
C. difficile
What are the toxins that C. difficile produces
Toxin A: Enterotoxin
Toxin B: Cytotoxin
Both act in the cytoplasm of host to glycosylate GTP - cells lose cytoskeleton and die
Toxin A
Enterotoxin- produces fluid, damages mucosa
Toxin B
Cytotoxin- rounding of cells
What is the major wound pathogen
C. perfringens
Which clostridium species causes gangrene and muscle damage
C. perfringens
C perfringens toxins and effect
Produces 12 toxins:
Alpha toxin (lecithinase)- damages cell membrane
Enterotoxin- when food poisoning
C. botulinum types
Food borne
Wound
Infant
C. botulinum toxins and effect
Produces 8 toxins- serotype A-G
Prevents release of Neurotransmitter- acetylcholine- get flaccid paralysis
What is affected first in C. botulinum
CN’s affected first then respiratory paralysis
C. tetani major toxin
Tetanospasmin:
Heavy chain and light chain connected by disulfide bridge but individually nontoxic
Inhibits NT release- spastic release and reflex spasm
General effect of C. tetani
Trismus- lock jaw
