• Mechanism of Action
o Inhibits ADP receptors on platelets and prolongs bleeding time by irreversibly inhibiting platelet aggregation
• Indications
o Reduce risk of CVA/MI
o Reducing thrombolytic events post CVA/MI
o Prevent DVT
o Prevent Thrombi formation unstable angina/coronary stents
• Contraindictions:
Active Bleeding
Precautions
o High risk of bleeding
o Severe hepatic disease
• Drug Interactions
o Increased risk of bleeding with anticoags, antiplatelets, thrombolytic agents and NSAIDs
o Diminished antiplatelet actions with drugs that inhibit hepatic metabolic enzymes
o Increased anticoagulant activity with drugs that increase hepatic metabolic enzymes
• Adverse Effects
o Flu like syndrome o Headache o Diarrhea o Bruising URTI o Rash o Pruritis
• Serious Adverse Effects

• Nursing Responsibilities
o Assess current use of anticoags and NSAIDs
o Assess for increased bleeding risk
o Monitor for bleeding
o Evaluate unexplained fever/infection
• Patient/Family Teaching
o Immediately report unusual bleeding
o Know it may take longer to stop bleeding
o Do not stop taking drug
o Do not use NSAIDs other OTC meds, herbal supps
o Inform dentist and other care providers prior to procedure
