Indications
o Parenteral route
• Relief of moderate or severe pain
o Sublingual route
o Treatment for opioid withdrawal and dependence
Contraindictions
o Respiratory depression
o Cardiac arrhythmias

Adverse Affects
o Respiratory depression (less than morphine)
o Prolonged QT interval with long term use of patch form
Nursing Considerations
o Protect patch site from heat
o Monitor EKG
o May take 1 to 2 wks to become effective

lower potential for dependence
used to treat moderate pain
do not work that well
