Cloning Flashcards
What is a Clone?
An Organism that has a gene code that is exactally identical to another organism - for example, an identical twin.
Five examples of organisms that naturally clone themselves;
- Grass
- Potatoes
- Strawberries
- Bacteria
How do some plants clone themselves?
- Grass grows clones out of it’s extended roots before disconnecting the new clones.
- Strawberries grows clones along ‘runners’.
- Potatoes grows clones out of tubers.
- Flowers like bluebells grow clones out of bulbs.
How does Artificial Twinning work?
The early embryo is separated into different cells and then the scientists let them grow before they implant the new embryos into different organisms of the same species. This makes the offspring identical twins.
How does Therapeutic Cloning work?
The DNA is taken from any cell (except sperm / egg cell) and put into an egg cell with it’s own DNA taken away. The zygote is then given a shock and after an early embryo has grown, the stem cells are harvested from it. The embryo has the same gene code as it’s parent.
