Clo 6 Flashcards
Bifurcation definition:
Two roots
Trifurcation definition:
Three roots
Maxillary molars are ____furcated
Trifurcated
Mandibular molars are ___furcated
Bifurcated
What are cusps?
- Pointed peak located on the occlusal surface
- Found on molars, premolars and canines
What are cingulums? Where are they found?
- single lobe on anterior teeth
- prominence of enamel found on the lingual cervical third
How are lobes formed?
Teeth are developed in pieces. Become fused to firm the crown of the teeth. Each “piece” is a lobe
General rule: facial of incisors, canines and premolars form from __ facial lobes. The lingual forms from one lobe to equal __ lobes.
a) 3
b) 4
General rule: the molar ____ is a lobe- depends on number of _______ = lobes
a) cusp
b) cusps
How many lobes on incisors?
3 lobes
How many lobes on premolars?
4 lobes
How many lobes on molars?
4-5 lobes
How many lobes on 3rd molars?
No specific answer: many
What are mamelons?
Rounded prominence on the in is al edge/ridge of newly erupted teeth
Formed => fusion of the three facial lobes
What is a tubercle?
- A smaller elevation different from the cusp tip of a molar
- Occurs on facial, lingual and occlusal surfaces
What is a ridge?
- A convexity (bulge) of enamel on the tooth
- surrounds all the cusps on posterior teeth or the edge of anterior teeth only on the lingual
What is a marginal ridge?
- Rounded elevation of enamel forming the mesial and distal border of teeth
- anterior teeth marginal ridges are located on the lingual
What is a triangular ridge?
- The ridges on teeth and cusp tips are convex
- the main triangular ridge runs from the cusp tip to the central part of the occlusal surface
What is a transverse ridge?
- The union of two triangular ridges
- buccal to lingual over the occlusal surface of a posterior tooth
- buccal triangular ridge + lingual triangular ridge = transverse ridge
Where are oblique ridges found?
Only on the maxillary molars
What is a fossa?
A concavity (depression)
Where is the lingual fossa located?
Is located between the marginal ridges and in is al ridge to the cingulum
Central vs. Triangular fossa:
- Central fossa: deep angular valley in the central portion of the occlusal surfaces of molars
- triangular fossa: shallow pyramid shaped depression on the occlusal surfaces of the posterior teeth (located within the confines of the mesial and distal marginal ridges)
What are grooves?
- tooth forms in lobes and fuse => groove demarcation in the occlusal surface
